It was the last day of an eventful year for me. My wife just had a miscarriage about a couple of months earlier. I wasn't looking forward to attending any parties. I was never a big fan of loud parties, but i had to accept the invitation because it came from my wife's youngest uncle who happens to celebrate his birthday every new year's eve. I was the newest addition to the family, having just gotten married earlier that year, so i couldn't say no. It was a bitterly cold night with the wind blowing fiercely making it feel much colder. A fresh coating of white fluffy snow covered the streets from an earlier snow storm. On to the party we went fighting our way through the weather elements. We got there safely in almost an hour and a half, double the time it usually takes to get there. One could tell that there was some kind of an event taking place just by looking at all the cars that filled every tiny parking spot on that otherwise quiet street. We couldn't find a parking spot on that street, so we had to park our car on one of the side streets. As soon as we got out of the car, we could hear the music blasting loudly. I knew right there and then that i was going to have a head-ache. The music got louder with every step we took towards the house. As we reached the corner, we saw the well lit house with two trees standing tall in front of it with blinking Christmas lights wrapped around every branch so neatly lighting up the snow flakes hanging on the tree branches. The place was packed with people as we made our way into the house, where we were welcomed by the host, who thankfully accepted our gift. As i looked around, i saw many familiar and unfamiliar faces, mostly members of my wife's family including aunts, uncles, and cousins, most of them dressed nicely for the occasion. In the corner of the huge living room sat a big wide screen silver television showing a movie that nobody was watching. Across the room stood two enormous black loud-speakers that blasted the music loud enough to shake the ground beneath us. In between the speakers stood the d-jay with the rest of his electronic equipment, feeding records into his record player. All kinds of colorful decorations along with happy birthday and happy new years signs littered the walls all around. In the middle of the floor, there were a bunch of people dancing to the music. While in the back some were eating and others were gobbling down all kinds of drinks. My wife was walking around talking to everyone and introducing me to some of her family members that i've never met before. Less than half an hour passed by, and i already had a head-ache bigger than the house. I lost my voice trying to talk loud enough so that people talking to me could hear me. At that point, i was ready to leave. However, i could not because my wife was seemingly having so much fun, so i decided to hang around until she was ready to leave. Soon after, every one gathered around a big vanilla and choclate ice-cream cake, with happy birthday Tony written on it. Every one started to sing happy birthday to Tony. There were so many people taking pictures, it looked like a lightning storm with all the flashing lights. Before long, the clock struck midnight, signaling the beginning of the new year. I turned to my wife, gave her a kiss and wished her a happy new year. In the meantime every one was going crazy, yelling and screaming while black plastic happy new year hats and little colorful horns were handed out. I found myself blowing one of those horns contibuting to the increased level of noise. My head-ache somehow was gone, and all of a sudden it did not sound so noisy when i became a part of the noise-making group. Ten minutes after half past midnight, my wife asked me if i was ready to leave, my answer was yes. We wished every one a happy and healthy new year and we were on our way back to our home. That was my last new year's eve party. Since that night, i have celebrated new year's eve home with my family away from the noise and the crowds and all the hoopla that goes around with them.
