Taking Care Of A Dog
Adam
was an eleven years old kid who lived with his sister and parents in a
middle class suburb of New York City where the winter is harsh and
cold. He loved dogs so much and always wished that he could
have his own dog to play with and take care of. He asked his
parents many times to get him a dog, but they never did. Their excuse
was that he was too young to take care of one. "Taking care of a dog is
a big responsibilty." His father always said. " We live in an
apartment, and we don't have a backyard to keep the dog in." His
mother told him all the time.

Adam
waited a couple of weeks before his twelveth birthday and approached
his dad and said: "Dad, i will be twelve years old soon, i think i am
ready to take care of a dog, Besides, that would be my best ever
birtday gift." His father looked straight at him, and asked: "So you
think you are ready to take care of a dog by yourself?" "Yes,
definitely" adam replied right away. Then his father paused for a
second and said:"OK, i'll tell you what then, i will make you a deal, i
will get you a computerized toy dog that acts like a real dog and see
how you manage. If you take care of that dog i will get a real one." "A
computerized dog, what is that?" Adam asked. His father answered with a
smile:"Yes, a toy dog that barks when it is hungry or needs to be taken
for a walk to relieve itself just like a real dog would, and of course,
the little computer in it registers everytime it was ignored. Like if
the dog barked for food or a walk and you did not give it food or walk
it , the computer registers that." " But dad how can i feed a toy dog?"
Adam asked. " Don't worry, you don't have to give it real food,
whatever you are supposed to feed it comes with the toy. I don't want
you to take it for a walk outdoors either, all you have to do is walk
it from your room to the kitchen and back four times. Any more
questions?" His father asked. "Actually, yes i have one more question.
How would i know if it is barking for food or for a walk?" Adam asked.
"It has two little lights on its head, if the orange light is blinking
when it barks, that means it needs food, but if the red light is
blinking when it barks, that means it needs to be walked." " OK, daddy,
it's a deal, i will prove to you and mom that i am a big boy now and
that i can take care of a little dog." Adam said to his dad. "Fine."
His dad said " I will get you that toy dog tomorrow, and by your
birthday you will get a real dog if the toy dog was not ignored
more than twice." "OK daddy, i love you" Adam said with a big smile on
his face.

The
very next day Adam's father bought the toy dog and gave it to Adam.
Adam was so happy because he knew that this was his chance to get
the real dog. Afterall, how hard would it be to take care of a
toy dog for two weeks, he thought. Adam took the dog for a walk after
giving it some food and went to sleep.

Very
early the next morning Adam woke up when the dog started barking. He
looked at the time and said: " 4:30 in the morning, that's way too
early." But he knew he had to get up to walk the dog as the red light
was flashing, so he did, and went back to sleep. Later the same day
Adam was playing with his sister one of his favorite games when the dog
started barking again. He stopped playing eventhough he did not want to
and gave his toy dog some food.

Adam
did what he was supposed to do to take care of the toy dog for the
first four days, but by the fifth day the dog started to bark early in
the morning again, but Adam was so tired so he did not get up to walk
it. Two days later, he was playing his playstation, and yes you guessed
it, the dog sarted barking again, Adam did not stop playing to feed the
dog. By the seventh day, Adam was almost totally ignoring the toy dog,
just feeding it once a day, and walking it once every other day. Two
days before his birthday, he checked to see how many times he ignored
the dog and he was shocked to see that the toy dog was ignored 23
times. He realized then that there were a lot more to having a dog than
just to play with it. He went straight to his parents and said:"Dad,
mom, you were right all along, taking care of a dog is a bigger
responsibility than i thought, and i don't think that i am ready for it
yet." "We are glad that you realized that." His mommy said. " I am
really proud of you Adam." His daddy said. "You have just proved to me
that you are a responsible boy by knowing what you can and cannot
handle." "Can i get a bicycle for my birthday instead of a dog?" Adam
asked. "Yes you can." His parents replied. Soon after that the dog
started barking again. "Is there a way to make it shut up" Adam asked.
"Yes, of course, just take the batteries out." His mom said while
everone was laughing.
